SSI Classes

Try Scuba

Try Scuba is an orientation to diving that allows non-divers to experience diving in a pool and open water, under the direct supervision of a dive instructor, with a minimal amount of instruction and classroom time.

Knowledge: The academic session focuses on the immediate needs of divers such as equipment adjustment, equalizing pressure, breathing, moving through the water and orientation.

Skills: So you can start diving as soon as possible, you'll practice a reduced skill set with SSI's Comfort Through Repetition teaching method in a pool/confined water session.

Equipment: With the goal being to develop a working knowledge of scuba equipment, divers will receive an introduction to basic scuba equipment with an emphasis on equipment handling. Upon completing the Try Scuba program, divers can apply their experience and receive credit for their Try Scuba course when they enroll in the Passport Diver Program.

Passport Diver

Are you planning a vacation and want to dive at your destination? With SCUBA Works' Passport Diver Program, you can earn a passport to adventure and dive on colorful, shallow-water reefs under the direct supervision of a dive leader. The Passport Diver Program takes dive training to a new level of convenience and accessibility for first-time divers by focusing on just the knowledge and skills required to dive proficiently under the direct supervision of a dive leader. And your Passport will continue to be recognized by any participating Passport facility as long as you log at least one dive every six months. If you completed the Try Scuba program in the previous 14 days, you will receive credit for your academic session and Pool/Confined Water Session 1 and Open Water Those who complete the Passport Diver Program can apply their academic sessions, pool/confined water sessions and open water sessions to Open Water Diver certification.

Knowledge: Academics are limited to practical, "need to know" safety information that directly affects the immediate needs of divers.

Skills: So you can start diving as soon as possible, you'll practice a reduced skill set with SSI's Comfort Through Repetition teaching method in limited pool and open water sessions. Water training is emphasized so you can have fun diving. You will practice basic scuba skills in order to build ability and comfort.

Equipment: With the goal being to develop a working knowledge of scuba equipment, divers will receive an introduction to basic scuba equipment with an emphasis on equipment handling.

Diver Stress & Rescue

Diver Stress & Rescue is the recommended after Open Water Diver, because it helps you gain confidence and makes you a better buddy.

Knowledge: You will learn the signs of stress, and how to deal with stress in yourself and other divers before the dive, during the dive and after the dive. Also, you will learn about different personality types and the common actions of each type in stressful situations.

Skills: You will learn skills and techniques to help you and other divers prevent and overcome common stressors associated with diving. You will also learn self aid and buddy aid skills for potentially stressful and/or rescue situations.

Equipment: You will learn about how your equipment can help you to stay relaxed and enjoy every dive, what equipment is required in various rescue situations and how to use your equipment properly in the event of a rescue.

About Scuba Diving

Scuba diving is an awesome sport. You're like an astronaut floating weightlessly in space. In fact, NASA astronauts train for space shuttle missions in a huge water tank, and scuba divers are there to help them. Scuba divers are explorers, archaeologists, treasure hunters, and scientists. Scuba divers discover amazing things every day, because the oceans, rivers and lakes of the world are the last frontiers left on the planet. Scuba divers also work in dive stores, at exotic resorts, on oil rigs, in the military, and on hundreds of other jobs that require people to go underwater. Scuba divers also dive for fun and adventure. You can see sharks, dolphins, seals, and thousands of types of fish. You can dive in kelp, on coral reefs, in lakes anywhere that looks interesting and makes you wonder, "What's down there?" If you're looking for a new activity that's way cooler than soccer, snowboarding, karate and skydiving, check out scuba diving and the Scuba Rangers!
